Chapter 1

The Shepherd Boy

Bethlehem was a small town — you could walk from one end to the other in the time it takes to eat a meal. The houses were limestone, packed close together on the hillside, and in the mornings the smoke from the ovens drifted across the rooftops like a low cloud. The smell of fresh bread mixed with the dusty warmth of the animals penned outside the walls.

I was the youngest of eight sons. That meant I got the job nobody else wanted — tending my father's sheep. Every morning before dawn, I would lead them out to the pastures east of town, where the grass was good in the spring and the wadis still had water.

Don't think shepherding was peaceful. Wolves, bears, lions — they all prowled the wilderness around Bethlehem. I killed a lion once, and a bear. Not because I was brave. Because those sheep were my father's, and Jehovah gave me the strength to protect them. — 1 Samuel 17:34-36

Bethlehem

~10 km south of Jerusalem · Tribe of Judah · Population: a few hundred families

The air smelled of sheep and baking bread. Limestone houses reflected the sun so brightly you had to shade your eyes. In spring, the surrounding hills turned vivid green; by summer, everything was golden brown and dry.

Chapter 2

The Day Everything Changed

I remember my father's face when the prophet Samuel arrived. The whole town was trembling. Samuel said he had come to offer a sacrifice, but Jehovah had sent him to our house with a horn of oil and a secret purpose.

My brothers lined up — Eliab first, tall and strong. Samuel looked at him and thought, "Surely this is the one." But Jehovah said no. One by one, seven of my brothers stood before Samuel. Seven times, Jehovah said no.

Then Samuel asked: "Are these all the boys?" My father hesitated. "There's still the youngest — he's tending the sheep." I came in from the fields, dusty and sun-browned. And Jehovah said to Samuel: "Get up, anoint him, for this is the one!" — 1 Samuel 16:11, 12

The oil ran down my forehead. From that day, the spirit of Jehovah was with me in a way I had never felt before.

Chapter 3

Facing Goliath

The Valley of Elah was wide and dry. I had come to bring food to my brothers. What I found was the entire army of Israel paralysed with fear.

Goliath was enormous. Over nine feet tall. His armour alone weighed as much as a man. Every morning and evening for forty days he challenged Israel. No one moved.

"Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should taunt the armies of the living God?" Everyone looked at me like I was mad. But I knew something they had forgotten: this wasn't about me. It was about Jehovah.

Five smooth stones from the valley stream. One sling. And faith that the God who helped me kill a lion and a bear would not fail me now. — 1 Samuel 17:45-47

Valley of Elah

~25 km southwest of Jerusalem · Border territory between Israel and Philistia

A broad, flat valley with a seasonal streambed. The stones were smooth and worn. The heat pressed down. Thousands of men on each hillside, watching. The silence before battle was deafening.

Chapter 4

A Friend Like No Other

After the battle, I met Jonathan — Saul's son. The Bible says his soul became "bound up" with mine. He loved me as himself. — 1 Samuel 18:1

Jonathan was the crown prince. By every human measure, he should have seen me as a rival. But he never showed jealousy. He gave me his robe, his sword, his bow. He was saying: "I accept Jehovah's choice."

In the years Saul hunted me, Jonathan risked his life to find me and "strengthen my hand in regard to God." — 1 Samuel 23:16. I would not have survived without him.

Chapter 5

Running for My Life

Saul's jealousy turned to madness. He threw a spear at me twice. After that, I ran. For years I lived as a fugitive: Adullam, En-gedi, Ziph.

Four hundred men joined me — "in distress, in debt, and bitter of soul." I became their leader. — 1 Samuel 22:1, 2

Twice I had the chance to kill Saul. In a cave at En-gedi he came in alone. My men whispered: "Jehovah has given him to you!" I crept close and cut the edge of his robe. But even that made my heart strike me. He was Jehovah's anointed. — 1 Samuel 24:5-7

Chapter 6

King at Last

I was thirty years old when I finally became king — first over Judah in Hebron, then over all Israel. Forty years total. — 2 Samuel 5:4, 5

When we brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, I danced before Jehovah with all my might. Michal despised me for it. But I wasn't dancing for her. I was dancing for Jehovah. — 2 Samuel 6:14, 21, 22

Jehovah made a covenant with me — my throne established forever. It pointed to something far greater than me. — 2 Samuel 7:16

Chapter 7

My Greatest Failure

I have to tell you about this, because it would be dishonest not to. And because my failure might help you avoid yours.

It started one evening on the palace roof. I saw Bathsheba bathing. I should have looked away. Instead I sent for her. She was another man's wife — Uriah the Hittite, one of my most loyal soldiers.

When Bathsheba became pregnant, I tried to cover it up. When that failed, I arranged for Uriah to die in battle. I married Bathsheba. I thought no one knew. But Jehovah knew. — 2 Samuel 11

When Nathan confronted me, I said: "I have sinned against Jehovah." The consequences were devastating. But Jehovah, in his mercy, forgave me. — 2 Samuel 12:13

Chapter 8

Family Heartbreak

My son Absalom was beautiful — the most handsome man in all Israel. And he broke my heart. He raised a rebellion and drove me from Jerusalem. I walked out barefoot, weeping. — 2 Samuel 15:30

When he was killed, I didn't care about the victory: "My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you!" — 2 Samuel 18:33

I wasn't a perfect father. My failures at home caused pain that no military victory could heal. Learn from this. Please.

My Mistakes & What Jehovah Taught Me

I made terrible mistakes — not small ones. Adultery. Murder. Pride. Failure as a father. If I can teach you anything, it's this: Jehovah doesn't expect perfection. He expects a heart that turns back to him when it breaks.

Bathsheba and Uriah: My worst sin. Desire, deception, and death — all because I didn’t look away when I should have. Jehovah forgave me, but the consequences followed me for the rest of my life. — 2 Samuel 11-12; Psalm 51

Numbering the people: Near the end of my reign, pride led me to count Israel’s fighting men. 70,000 died. — 2 Samuel 24:10, 17

Failing as a father: I didn’t discipline Amnon. I let Absalom’s resentment fester. Some of the deepest pain I caused was to my own children.
